Powder Foundations: Your Makeup Summer Solution

With summer already here- well at least in some parts of the world- certainly not here in Brussels, most of us are faced with having to change our makeup routine and adapt it to the humidity and heat of the warmer months, which brings powder foundations to the starring role, being a great and quick solution to our makeup routine.

Powder foundations will give you enough coverage and a refined polished look to achieve flawless skin in no time, doubling up as a retouching powder throughout the day as well.

The most important thing is to pick the right one suited to your skin type and that provides the coverage you desire. Here are some recommendations, from high-end to drugstore, according to skin type:

A new member to Estée Lauder’s most coveted anti-age line

If -like me- you are a fan of Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair (ANR) serum, you’ll be excited to know that a new member will be added to the family in July 2016, and that is the ANR Ampoules.

Each capsule will contain a single dose of this new “super intense serum”, that should be used underneath the regular ANR. It promises to show results within the first 3 days of use and more resilient skin within 2 weeks.

Let’s do our makeup – Video

Hi there ! Here I’m attempting at another You Tube video. This time I’ll be sharing a “Get Ready with Me” simple makeup application.

I’m using all sorts of products from drugstore to mid-range prices, and it takes me about 10 minutes to do this morning routine. Hope you like it!

Hola! Aquí estoy intentando con otro video de You Tube! Esta vez comparto con Uds. una sencilla aplicación de maquillaje de día en un video llamado: “Get Ready with Me”

MAKE UP FOREVER PRO-SCULPTING PALETTE & ULTRA HD FOUNDATION STICK

When I saw that MUFE (MAKE UP FOREVER) had launched their own cream sculpting/contouring palette, I wasn’t just intrigued, I knew I HAD to try it. So, I got the palette together with their new ULTRA HD Stick foundation (among others) to see how the two performed.

The Palette comes in 4 different shades, with 4 different colors inside respectively to: Highlight/Conceal, Contour, Shimmer and Color the face.

  • 20 Light
  • 30 Medium
  • 40 Tan
  • 50 Dark

Pro Sculpting Palette in 30

Contouring is not an easy makeup technique, and certainly one that requires more than the amount of time most people dedicate to do it, which -more often than not- translates in a sloppy application. I, personally, find that contouring with creamy formulas take a lot of time and precision to blend really well to avoid getting a streaky face, but the end result with creams is dewier and more natural than with powders, as the cream sort of fusions with the skin. You can ease the application of this palette with a beauty blender.

Pros:

  • In one palette you have all the shades you need to contour, highlight and add color with the blush shade, which is a peachy fresh color.
  • The matte highlight shade can also be used as a concealer, which is a plus.
  • It comes in different colors, so there’s choice for different ethnicities.
  • It comes with a little leaflet that shows how to contour according to your face shape.

Cons:

  • Price, at 45$ and 48€ it’s not cheap, considering you only get 2.5g from each shade.
  • I got number 30, which is the medium colored palette, and the contour shade runs a bit orange on me.
  • It’s a bit difficult to get the product from the palette with a brush, as each square is too small and close together.

Verdict: If you are new to the contour world, and/or makeup I’d suggest to go for something cheaper, until you get the hang of the technique. Other than that it’s a nice palette to have as it’s an all in one deal, but I’m not overly impressed by it.

Now, the ULTRA HD Foundation Stick is a different kind of monster…I’m absolutely in love with it! I got it in two colors, one that matches my skin perfectly (127) and a lighter shade (117) to contour and highlight at the same time.

ULTRA HD foundation in 117 & 127

Pros:

  • Great coverage with a dewy finish.
  • Comes in a wide range of colors.
  • Application is fool-proof as it blends almost instantly with your skin, I find that applies like a dream with the help of a beauty blender.

    ULTRA HD foundation in 117 & 127

Cons:

  • At 40€ can be expensive if you use it daily, as it only contains 12,5g.
  • Would not recommend it to oily skin types, as it’s very emollient and it will have you shining in no time.IMG_6886

Verdict: Love this foundation, great for an easy application and a good moderate to full coverage, without a mask effect, highly recommend it.

Trending Full Coverage Foundations

The featured full-coverage foundations have been the talk of the town Instagram, for quite some time now, so I needed to check if the hype was legitimate.  I used each one of them for at least 4 days in a row, so I could report back to you with a solid opinion. For reference I’m a MAC NC25-NC30, normal-combination skin.

1 ) Kay Von D Lock-It Foundation:

Pros:

  • This one is a perfect match for my skin in Medium 52, and this is basically what I love the most about this one. It’s so difficult to find the perfect shade in a foundation, most of the time I need to buy different colors and mix them to get the right shade, but this one is just spot on.
  • It does provide full coverage and it gives an almost instant matte finish.
  • It didn’t separate or budge on my skin, and the result was always the same whenever I used it regardless of the primer.

    e9134bb14360815e6ffcdc1643a280e0
    Kat Von D Lock-it Foundation

Cons:

  • On my combination skin, it gives such a matte finish that it ends up looking ever so slightly flat, which is a look I’m not so fond of.

Bottom line: I would recommend this one to oily skinned gals looking for high coverage and long lasting matte finish. Combination skins can also benefit from its coverage, providing a good moisturizer gets applied well before its application.

2) Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able Full Cover Foundation Concentrate

Pros:

  • Its package (this one is a pro and a con) looks gorgeous on the outside, but it’s messy once you open it and start using it up.
  • Coverage is extremely high with this one, it’s true what they say about just needing a drop, that’s actually all you need to cover almost everything.

    WN1
    Re (marc) able Foundation

Cons:

  • The applicator, although handy, it makes a mess of the bottle.
  • Too dry for my combination skin, I tried a thicker moisturizer, plus different primers, but still it didn’t look good on me at all. It made my pores look huge, it separated it from my skin, it looked like mask right upon application…I will wait to use more of it during the summer, hotter days before officially writing it off my book.

Bottom line: This one is high-octane coverage, verging on mask-looking, suited mainly to oily skins and people wanting to hide it all.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup

*Not really a novelty on the list, but it deserves to be mentioned…

000368282

Pros:

  • Love the elegant glass bottle, I know some might object to this, but it’s a true classic.
  • Color range is a bit limited here in Europe, but the line has a broader one in the US, so there’s a shade for every ethnicity. I found my shade in 2W2 Rattan.
  • Coverage is high, but on me personally, it blends with my skin beautifully throughout the day, giving a sort of glowy creamy effect, which I absolutely adore.
  • A bottle will last a long, long time, even with daily use.

Cons:

  • It might be a bit drying during the winter months, even with good primed skin, so for combinations skins I would recommend primarily for the summer time.

Bottom line: It’s not by chance that this one holds a top spot after so many years on the market, with such fierce competition and revolutionary formulas out there. I was reluctant to try it all these years, and I sort of regret it…do give it a try.

Too Faced Born this way

Pros:

  • The coverage is just perfect for me. It covers very well, delivering a perfect canvas without looking like a mask.
  • It dries to a matte velvety finish, that lasts for at least 6 hours without retouching.
  • Got my match in the shade Light Beige, not as spot on as the Kat Von D, but it blended so nicely you couldn’t really tell.

too-faced-born-this-way

Cons:

  • Not sure they have a color range that suits everyone out there, although they claim they do.

Bottom line: This one was my favorite for an everyday use, love the finish, the color, the bottle…it certainly lives up to the hype.

Have you tried any of these? What’s your current foundation?

Natural makeup for freckled faces

It has taken me  F O R E V E R to finally dare, put all my self-criticism and fears aside and make my first makeup tutorial !!!!! You can’t even begin to imagine what this overly impatient 30 something-highly tech-challenged had to go through to put those almost 9 minutes together, but I did it!!!

Good news is that I loved the learning process, and I’m thrilled with the challenge of continue improving with each new one. I now have a bunch of subjects that I’ll be sharing with you on my You Tube channel 😉  This first video is in Spanish, with its English version coming out later this week.

Hope you enjoy it!

KIKO Weightless Perfection SPF 30: Good, Bad or Blah?

IMG_2273

Powder foundations are the easiest way to get a flawless or semi-flawless face in no time, shortening your makeup routine in the mornings, doubling as a retouch powder throughout the day.

KIKO Weightless Perfection is their latest wet and dry powder foundation with a brand new, more sophisticated packaging as well. As it name suggests, it can be used wet to get more coverage or dry for a sheerer one. It comes in a shiny dark silver case, with a separate compartment to carry the sponge. The powder has SPF30, which is always welcome, though you can’t entirely rely on it for sun protection. Here’s my breakdown… Continue reading “KIKO Weightless Perfection SPF 30: Good, Bad or Blah?”

Heavy Coverage Concealers: Melasma, Pregnancy spots, Dark spots, Insomnia

IMG_6225When it comes to concealers and correctors, I can safely say that I’ve gone through a fair share of them. I not only got genetic dark circles, but I’m also a poor sleeper, meaning each morning I look like a character from the Living Walking Dead!!!! I kid you not! 🙁

On top of that I’m no longer 20, so those dark circles get even more pronounced with the help of under eyes bags!! I’m telling you I hit the jackpot!

As you could certainly imagine, I have tried almost everything under the sun to try to tone down those dark circles, because you can’t even talk about hiding them…let’s be honest, when you are tired and sleep deprived you can only do so much…there’s no miracle cure, other than getting some sleep.
